WYCLIFFE GORDON AND JAY LEONHART -
This Rhythm on my Mind (2006)
Hear more and purchase at CD Baby
"Fun" is a word that one seldom hears in connection with jazz anymore. It's a word that easily describes Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway and many others who reigned supreme during jazz' pre-bop era, but the more jazz moved in a generally intellectual direction in the 1950s, '60s, '70s and '80s — the more jazz musicians sought to be associated with "high art" rather than pop culture — the less fun jazz' image became. But the word "fun" is most definitely applicable on This Rhythm on My Mind, a Wycliffe Gordon/Jay Leonhart collaboration READ MORE

LONDON ARRINGTON -
Between Lenox & 7th (2006)
Hear more and purchase at CD Baby
While this collection of jazzy soul is decidedly modern, it's the traces of retro vibes from the tremendous players that make it stand out. While so many modern R&B albums are overly determined to showcase a vocalist, this group does so with class, backing the singer up with some musicians who can really pay tribute to the form. It's a reminder of why soul involves such an important group dynamic: The front man can't shine if his backing band isn't right there with him. Lucky for us, these guys mesh and groove with ease, kicking out stimulating bass lines and then smoothing them out with horn hits and solos that really add to the arrangements. This isn't to take anything away from the vocals, which are great to begin with but can't help but benefit from that little extra punch that the band adds. This is soul the way it should be, songs about love and life that take you out of that lull and get your insides stirring.

WYCLIFFE GORDON AND MARTY ERICKSON -
You and I (2008)
Hear more and purchase at CD Baby
This album features two internationally recognized and recorded jazz artists: Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, piano and vocals, and Marty Erickson on Tuba. This CD features two tunes based on the old "street musician" idea: "Back Home Again in Indiana" and "I'm Going to Sit Write Down and Write Myself a Letter" use only trombone, tuba, voice and "brushes on a box" (in this case--a cajon) to simulate the street jam session. On "Multiphonic Intoduction" and "BaloozieVocalisetusietoon tune" the players trade cadenzas singing and playing simultaneously before this great Wycliffe original.
Overall, this CD simply finds the groove on every tune, and you can't help but smile in the listening; especially when Wycliffe scat sings with his own special "lyrics!" MORE
