Bluesback Records was established in 2006 by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, coinciding with the release of his "Rhythm On My Mind", a collaboration with bassist Jay Leonhart. Wanting full artistic control, autonomy and the freedom to release as he creates was the main impetus behind creating Bluesback. It was during a meeting with Jay while Wycliffe's composition "I Want My Blues back"played in the background, that the two laughed and decided on the name for the company. Bluesback records serves as a vehicle for other artists in Wycliffe's universe who have consistently created strong original recordings.

The second release for the label was R&B singer, London Arrington's "Between Lenox and Seventh",a top notch high energy funk record. Wycliffe crafted the album through musical collaboration, arranging and producing all the original Arrington tunes.

Wycliffe then returned to his personal collection from his Signature Series. The first of 5 records to be released, "BloozBluzeBlues" has Wycliffe engaging the listener with all original Gordon tunes of straight ahead jazz played by Wycliffe and his friends, Herlin Ryley, Delfayo marsalis, Eric Reed, Victor Goines to name a few.

Bluesback then released the soulful R&B singer Tomoko's "Organically Afro-Asiatic". Wycliffe originally met Tomoko while on tour in Japan with Winton Marsalis. He liked the singer's sound and energy and decided when she re-located to NYC to produce and guest play on her debut album.

The latest release is from a young trombonist who had been a student of Wycliffe's for many years. Wycliffe reconnected with Michael Dease and released his debut "Clarity", a beautiful straight ahead jazz album of primarily originals.

Wycliffe Gordon ’s latest efforts, “Boss Bones ” and “You and I” are quintet CD’s with trombonist Andre Hayward and tubist Marty Erickson, the latter is a new release on Bluebacksback Records.
